Professor Cheema graduated from FJ Medical College Lahore in 1984, and was declared best all round graduate with distinction and five gold medals. She passed MRCP UK (Pediatrics) exam in 1992. She was awarded Diploma in Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition with distinction and a gold medal by University of London in 1995.

Prof. Cheema started her career in Pediatrics at Mayo Hospital Lahore and later trained at King's College and Guy's Hospital London UK. Subsequently she trained in Pediatric Gastroenterology-Hepatology & Nutrition at St Bartholomew's, King's College, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in London UK. In 1998 she joined University of Child Health Sciences Lahore where she pioneered the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology-Hepatology in Pakistan. She is currently Professor Emeritus at University of Child Health Sciences Lahore. She is Director of Pediatric Gastroenterology-Hepatology Fellowship training program of CPSP. She is Chairperson of Pakistan Pediatric Association Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition group.

Prof. Cheema has over 100 publications and book chapters to her credit. She has been an invited speaker to major national & international forums.
